La Liga: Barcelona Wins Their First Match Under Vilanova As Real Frustrated by Valencia

Barcelona 5-1 Real Sociedad
Leo Messi Was Again In form Against The Real Sociedad Scoring Twice In A High-Five Match.Barcelona Ended Their 1St Game In style In The First Appearance Of The new Catalunya Manager Tito Vilanova who won the day By 5-1.Carles Puyol, Pedro and David Villa, who came on for his first competitive action since breaking his leg last December."It was a good win but the best news of all is the return of 'El Guaje' (Villa), we have missed him," Barca midfielder Xavi told Spanish television.World Player of the Year Messi scored a league record 50 goals last season and settled Barca with quick strikes to give them a 3-1 lead inside 15 minutes at the Nou Camp.Pedro volleyed in a fourth just before the break but the biggest cheer was reserved for Spain striker Villa when he was brought on in the second half and then stroked home the fifth goal near the end.

Real Madrid 1-1 Valencia
Earlier, Gonzalo Higuain gave Real a 10th-minute lead from Angel Di Maria's cross and, in stifling temperatures, they comfortably held the visitors at bay until just before the break.Valencia, sporting a host of new faces, had few ideas going forward but levelled when Jonas headed in from a free kick.Alves was the visitors' outstanding player in the second half, keeping out a string of efforts as Real upped their game and pressed, but Valencia held firm to help earn a point for their new coach Mauricio Pellegrino."I expected more from my team," Mourinho told a news conference. "We haven't played a great game, but we did enough to win."Up on the north coast, Real Betis overcame Athletic Bilbao at San Mames in an eight-goal thriller. The visitors were three goals up in 31 minutes before last season's Europa League and King's Cup finalists responded in the second half.Bilbao's Oscar De Marcos got a goal back just after the break and Mikel San Jose then struck twice to level the scores with 14 minutes to go before Betis finally triumphed late on through Alejandro Pozuelo and Jorge Molina with his second.

Barclays Premier League 2012-2013 2nd Day Round-Up

Wigan Athletic 0-2 Chelsea
Eden Hazard inspired Chelsea to a 2-0 win at Wigan on his Premier League debut, providing an assist for Branislav Ivanovic to score in the second minute before being fouled for Frank Lampard's penalty five minutes later.Chelsea remained comfortable for the rest of the match, although Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez missed several chances in the second half.Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo was delighted with the Hazard's impact."Hazard was outstanding, produced a lot of quality and was always a threat," Di Matteo said. "He was difficult to mark and it was pleasant to watch him today."It was perfect that we managed to score two early on. It settled nerves. We were looking for a good start, but it doesn't always happen."Wigan debutant Ivan Ramis was at fault for both Chelsea goals Hazard turning away from him to play in Ivanovic and the Spanish defender brought down the Belgian international in the penalty area moments later.Manager Roberto Martinez refused to criticize Ramis after the match, instead preferring to focus on his team's improved performance after going two goals down."We didn't start with the intensity you need in the league. It was like a preseason game, but I was pleased with the reaction," Martinez said. "If you drop one per cent in this league, you get punished. I felt we had our chances, and if we had scored at least once we would have a better feeling. It is a start we can build on though."Ramis made up for his error in the second half, clearing Fernando Torres' chip off the line as Chelsea looked to increase its lead. Brazilian attacking midfielder Oscar, who came off the bench to make his first Chelsea appearance, also went close in the finishing stages.

Man City 3-2 Southampton
Manchester City as the Barclays Premier League champions opened its title defense with a thrilling 3-2 win over newly-promoted Southampton on Sunday. Not only was the score exactly the same as that never-to-be-forgotten final home game against QPR last season, so was the scoring sequence, and even the ends they went in at the Etihad Stadium. The major difference was that this time, City did not wait until injury-time before responding to falling behind.Edin Dzeko was the man who equalized again though, before Samir Nasri fired home the winner 10 minutes from time.It was tough on Southampton, who stuck doggedly to their task, but paid the price for only holding its lead for four minutes as Rickie Lambert and Steve Davis responded to Carlos Tevez's first-half opener.Of the team that started that momentous day in May, only Gareth Barry was missing from Roberto Mancini's starting lineup. In his place, Jack Rodwell was introduced, though the debutant could do nothing to raise the tempo of a tepid opening half hour that included a double blow for City.First, Sergio Aguero tumbled awkwardly under an early Nathanial Clyne tackle and left the game. Although a few City fans sought to blame Clyne, he was not responsible. Aguero simply got himself tangled and the fact he did not move when he went down, was a tell-tale sign that the injury could be a bad one. After lengthy treatment on the pitch, there was a brief moment of hope when the stretcher was ushered away and Aguero was able to hobble to the touchline. It was soon back to carry him back to the dressing room, though.Early reports were encouraging and Mancini can only hope the damage, in one of the least congested periods of the season, is not too bad.Without being near its best, it did seem City would make light of Aguero's absence when Tevez turned far too smartly for Josh Hooiveld, whose attempt to do something constructive just inside the area only sent his opponent to the turf. The initial surprise was that Tevez didn't take the spot-kick himself. It looked even more of a strange decision when David Silva rolled a pathetic effort straight at Kelvin Davis. These events, coupled with City's general lethargy, gave Southampton genuine hope of springing a surprise. They had to reach the interval level. Tevez ensured they didn't.Tevez could not have timed his run any better as Nasri spotted him about to dart beyond Saints' defence. This time Jose Miguel Fonte was the defender who failed to keep tabs on his opponent, and Tevez made him pay by drilling a low shot into the near post, its power giving Davis no chance of keeping it out.It was only after halftime that the ghosts of May 13 began to swirl. As Dzeko, Clichy and Silva all wasted excellent opportunities, a sense of foreboding began to gather."We didn't play well and we didn't defend well," Mancini said. "But it is not always their fault. When a team like us has 10 chances to score, you should close the game. The second half I think we played so-so for many reasons and the players were so-so."After 27 goals in the Championship last season, Lambert's omission had been something of a surprise in the first place.Introduced by Nigel Adkins, the striker didn't take long to make his mark, three minutes to be precise as he seized on a loose ball on the edge of the City box and guided it superbly into the corner of Joe Hart's goal."I would have thought he was upset because everyone wants to play," Adkins said. "But I have to make decisions. We came up with a game plan and he was on the pitch to score when it mattered."Worse was to come for the hosts when Rodwell gifted possession to Southampton inside his own half, allowing the visitors to pour forward.Davis had been on the pitch even less time than Lambert. But he had his shooting boots on as well and Southampton found itself in front.Had it not been for what happened on this ground on May 13, no one would have believed it.That Southampton had done the damage with a possession statistic of 19 percent just made it more surreal. The drama continued. Dzeko, who scored the stoppage-time equalizer against QPR, pulled City level with a first-time shot after Vincent Kompany's piledriver had been blocked. And 10 minutes from time, somewhat earlier than before, Nasri belted home from 12 yards to complete yet another thrilling comeback.

Roger Federer Wins his Fifth Cincinnati Open Title

Roger Federer finds a lot to like about Cincinnati - the big crowds for his matches, the quiet time away from the court, the way his game seems to come together on the fast, blue courts.Probably helps that he often takes home the trophy, too.Make it five for Federer. The world's top-ranked player won a record fifth Cincinnati title Sunday, dominating second-ranked Novak Djokovic in an unprecedented way at the start of a 6-0, 7-6 (7) win for the Western & Southern Open championship. The 31-year-old Swiss star has enjoyed many of his one-week visits. None was better than the latest."Looking back, it's just unbelievable,'' Federer said. "This was probably the best week for me here in Cincinnati. I didn't lose a set. This is very sweet, no doubt about it.''Federer heads to the U.S. Open feeling healthy and fine-tuned. He skipped the Rogers Cup in Toronto last week, giving himself some time to recover from the Olympics in London. He's also regained the upper hand against one of the players who stands in his way.Djokovic had put together a run of three straight wins over Federer in tournament semifinals, starting with the U.S. Open last year. Federer turned it around by beating the Serb in the semis at Wimbledon last month. They got together in a finals match for the seventh time in their careers Sunday. They'd split the previous six, with Federer winning the only Grand Slam championship match - the U.S. Open in 2007.Quickly, the latest one became a bit of personal history. They've never had such a lopsided day together on the court.Ranked No. 1 and No. 2, perhaps, but worlds apart on this day.Federer won the first set in only 20 minutes, allowing Djokovic just 10 points. It was the first time in their 28 career matches that one of them took a set 6-0. For perspective, Federer hadn't beaten anybody 6-0 in a tournament final since 2007.Both players seemed a bit stunned."I was hoping for a good start, but not like that,'' Federer said.Perhaps Djokovic's schedule had something to do with it. After the Olympics, he went right to Toronto and won the Rogers Cup last Sunday. He didn't expect to make it to a second final in eight days."It was a final today, so I really wanted to win,'' Djokovic said. "There is no question about it. Maybe playing couple weeks in a row, four weeks in a row, got to me maybe mentally. Physically it didn't. I felt OK on the court.''Both reached the final in a dominating style - neither lost their serve or a set during the week.Federer put an end to that right away.Helped by a double-fault, Federer broke Djokovic's serve to start the match. Then, aided by two more double-faults, he broke him again to go up 3-0. Djokovic went to his chair at the break and grabbed a different racket, hoping to change the flow of the match.Made no difference whatsoever. Federer served back-to-back aces that Djokovic couldn't touch with that new racket. It was domination all around - Djokovic had 10 unforced errors in the opening set, the same number of points he won. The Serb had four double-faults, each one setting up a break point or ending a game. The fans gave Djokovic a loud ovation when he held serve to open the second set. The Serb looked up at the crowd and smiled while sipping water.Djokovic showed more energy in the second set but never put much pressure on Federer, who didn't face a break point. After a forehand sailed way long, Djokovic raised his arms, reared back and screamed. Now fully engaged in the match, he took the set to a tiebreaker.Djokovic survived one match point and got one point away from taking the tiebreaker. Federer ran off the last three points, closing it out with a forehand."At the end, I just snatched it,'' Federer said.Federer improved to 5-0 in Cincinnati finals and tied Rafael Nadal for the most Masters titles with 21. Nadal dropped out of the tournament with a sore knee that has sidelined him indefinitely. The loss snapped Djokovic's streak of 15 straight wins on hard courts, an encouraging sign heading into the Open. He figured the only thing lacking for New York was a little rest."I feel good on the court,'' Djokovic said. "The conditions here are quite different from the U.S. Open. It's a bit slower there, which I think goes in my favor a little bit more. More suitable to my style of the game."I'm going to have a week that I think is very necessary for me right now mentally and physically.''
