Iniesta delcared fit for the Catalan derby

Great news for the fans ahead of Sunday’s derby as Andrés Iniesta is declared fit for action by Club doctors after Saturday’s training session

And while his team-mates were put through their paces out on the pitch, David Villa continued his recovery work at the Club’s facilities. The players returned to training on Saturday morning after enjoying a day's break between Cup and league commitments.Andrés Iniesta, who picked up a leg injury in an earlier Cup game against Hospitalet, completed training without incident and was later handed the medical all clear.

Pep Guardiola was able to prepare for Sunday's Game with the 19 available first team players plus Isaac Cuenca from Barça B.  Ibrahim Afellay and David Villa will be out for some time yet.
Today, Villa coincided with his team-mates in training for the first time since his operation.
The team will have a final training session on Sunday.

Villa coincides with his team-mates at the Sports City

The Spanish international striker is continuing with his personal fight back to fitness after picking up a serious injury in the final of the World Club Cup

Happy to be back in the routine.David Villa met up with his team-mates at the Club's training facilities on Saturday morning where he reported for physiotherapy.  This was the first time that Villa, who is in the early stages of his recovery from a fractured tibia, has coincided with the rest of the squad.

After the training session, he published a photo featuring himself and team-mates Xavi and Puyol. "I'm very happy to be back in the routine.  Here I am back in the Sports City with all my team-mates.  My recovery is going well".  As Villa's words clearly show, he's optimistic and delighted to be back among the other players.

Cordiality ahead of the Catalan derby

Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino met at Cornellà – El Prat for the traditional handshake between managers.Guardiola and Pochettino met at Cornellà - El Prat this afternoon before tomorrow’s derby. The Argentinean and the Catalan met on the Perico pitch for the traditional handshake between managers and to wish each other good luck in front of the press. The managers showed their mutual respect for each other hours ahead of the Catalan derby.

Messi's desire:scores at Cornella

ESPANYOL'S new stadium is one of the few venues that the Argentinean superstar has yet  to christen with one of his goals .Xavi,on the other hand, has already scored on the Pericos four times. In Catalonia and Spain the Three Kings Day is a day of dreams and hopes, when aspirations are met and desires fulfilled. For Leo Messi, surely he’s hoping, amongst other things, to score at Cornella-El Prat, where he has yet to score a goal in his two visits to the Perico stadium. In total, the Argentinean has scored against Espanyol three times, but never whilst away from the Camp Nou. This Sunday could be his day.

San Mamés, a good precedent

Simply put, Messi is running out of challenges in the Liga. Up until a couple of months ago San Mamés was impenetrable for the Argentinean star, but in the last minute of the game against Los Leones a couple of months ago he broke his hex and scored, salvaging a valuable point for FC Barcelona. It’s a good precedent going into the Catalan derby against Espanyol.

Xavi’s second favorite victim

It’s a completely different story for Barça’s vice-captain, Xavi Hernández. The midfielder, a veteran and expert against Espanyol, has a knack for giving Barça’s city rivals a head ache. Espanyol has suffered four Xavi goals, the Terrasa man was one of the main protagonists in the 1-5 rout last season. Xavi has also scored against Espanyol twice at the Camp Nou, in the 2000/01 (4-2) season and in the 2001/02 (2-0) season, and once atMontjuïc, in the 2002/03 (0-2) season.

Barcelona vice-president Jordi Cardoner: I want us to face Real Madrid in Copa del Rey

The Barca official stressed that his side are not afraid of a showdown against Madrid and noted the two clubs should maintain institutional relations.Barcelona vice-president Jordi Cardoner says he wants his side to meet Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.The Catalan club have one foot into the last-eight stage after a 4-0 thrashing of Osasuna in the first leg of their round of 16 tie, while Madrid were made to work hard to pick up a 3-2 victory against Malaga after being down by two goals in the first half.

Barca were defeated by Jose Mourinho's side in the final of last season's Copa del Rey, but Cardoner is relishing the prospect of the two sides locking horns in the competition once again.

"I want us to face Madrid in the quarter-finals, the time for Barcelona's fans to be afraid of them is gone," Cardoner told COM Radio.

"I would be delighted to have more great finals against Madrid."

The Barca director added that despite the constant tension between his side and Madrid, he believes that the two Liga giants should not turn their back on each other.

"I do not defend breaking institutional relations," he noted. "Relations should not be broken, one thing is two clubs not being on the same page, another is to break relations."

Gary Cahill could be a Chelsea player by Sunday, says Owen Coyle

Gary Cahill could be a Chelsea player by Sunday, according to theBolton Wanderers manager, Owen Coyle, with Chelsea confirming that talks are ongoing regarding the defender's personal terms.
A fee has been agreed and Cahill will not play in Bolton's FA Cup tie at Macclesfield Town, though Coyle denied this is because of the defender's imminent move. Coyle said: "It's nothing to do with the continuing speculation regarding Chelsea. He's one of a number of players that probably needs to rest.
"And moving on, my opinion is I think there's a chance the deal can be concluded by the end of the week. That's where we're at, but I'm not a party to any continued dialogue between Chelsea and Gary's representative."
Coyle denied there had been bids for Cahill from any other clubs, despite reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. "When there's continued conjecture and everything that goes with it people are always going to throw up names," he said.
"There hasn't been any dialogue between ourselves and Manchester United or anything like that. We as a football club agreed a deal with Chelsea Football Club and for me that's binding."
Roberto Di Matteo, the Chelsea assistant manager, said: "A fee has been agreed and there are ongoing negotiations for personal terms. He would add very good qualities to our squad." But Di Matteo claimed this would not be a busy transfer window for Chelsea. He said: "I wouldn't expect too much to happen in this market. We are happy with the quality we have."
Asked if he was confident that Didier Drogba, who has been linked with a move to China, would still be a Chelsea player at the close of the window Di Matteo said: "Very confident."
He was equally unequivocal regarding Frank Lampard, whom Sir Alex Ferguson on Friday denied would be joining Manchester United this month. "I can't see him leaving this club," Di Matteo said. "He has been here for 10 years and he's part of the successful history of this club."
Di Matteo offered a spiky response to Ferguson ruling Chelsea, who are 11 points behind leaders Manchester City, out of the title race. "Well what did he say about his own team?" he said. "I respect what Sir Alex says but mathematically we can still win it and that is our view and we will fight."
For Sunday's FA Cup tie against Portsmouth at Stamford Bridge John Terry will undergo a fitness test on a knee on Saturday but Drogba and Salomon Kalou will be unavailable. The forwards fly to the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday to play for Ivory Coast after Chelsea failed in a request for them to feature against Portsmouth.

Serena looks set for the Open

Injured five-times champion Serena Williams has all but confirmed her participation in the Australian Open.
Williams was forced to withdraw from the Brisbane International after spraining her ankle during her second-round win over Serbian Bojana Jovanovski on Wednesday.
But the 13-times major winner on Friday indicated her recovery was coming along well ahead of the Open at Melbourne Park starting in 10 days."I am doing a lot better," Williams tweeted her 2,384,071 followers.
"Tks for the well wishes. I love u all. Big kiss. I'm determined to Win From Within.
"Being an athlete requires sacrifice, discipline & heart. There is no winning without hard work. I'm about to overcome this."
Williams, champion at Melbourne Park in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010, was unable to chase a hat-trick last year following foot surgery.
Australia's great hope Samantha Stosur on Friday was expecting the 30-year-old former world No.1 to be dangerous as ever at the season's first grand slam event.
"I'm sure she'll come back from that," Stosur said.
"I'm sure it's not a spot she'd like to be in either, but there's still a fair bit of time to prepare and I'm sure for her to get over that ankle injury.
"She'll do whatever she can to be as fit as she can be and I'm sure she'll be ready.
"I don't think it means she's any less of a threat of winning it than what she was before.
"I guess time will only tell."

Clijsters withdraws from Brisbane International

It may be the sound judgment of a seasoned tennis pro who knows the frailties of her own body better than anyone. Or it might be wishful thinking.
In either case, Kim Clijsters says she is determined to defend her Australian Open title despite suffering a major injury scare in her unfinished semi-final at the Brisbane International last night.
Leading by one set to love and trailing 3-1 in the second to Slovak Daniela Hantuchova, Clijsters called an injury time out to seek treatment on her left hip. She tried to continue but withdrew shortly afterwards.

Hantuchova has endured a charmed run at Brisbane. She was given a walkover in the quarter-finals when Serena Williams withdrew with an ankle injury and was gifted the semi-final last night after an enthralling start to the contest.
She meets unseeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi in the final on Pat Rafter Arena tonight.
Clijsters, the 2010 champion, had never lost a match in Brisbane and values the miles under her underutilised legs before opening hostilities at Melbourne Park.
But while another title in Queensland would have been a nice bonus, her decision to withdraw was based solely on her viability of defending her fourth Grand Slam title and the only won she has collected outside of the US.
Clijsters spoke to the media after dunking herself in an ice bath for 20 minutes and despite a positive spin on the injury, has reason to be concerned.
She missed much of last year with a series of ailments, taking an ankle injury into the French Open (second round loss) and missing both Wimbledon (ankle) and the US Open (stomach muscle).
She said her hip was stiff going into the match but she had no inkling it would cause her anything resembling the escalating pain she encountered as the match continued into the evening.
“I just felt my left hip getting tighter and tighter, to a point where I felt like I couldn’t go forward with her upper body. I couldn’t put any pressure on when I was landing on my serve,” Clijsters said.
“It was spasming up and getting worse throughout the first set. It was the smartest choice to try and not let it get any worse.
“I’m going to the hospital tomorrow (Saturday) to have some more tests down, an echo and an MRI. It looks like a left hip strain and all the muscles around it were compensating.”
One promising sign for Clijsters is that she has suffered a left hip strain before. It was so bad she didn’t even remember it happening and only found out when informed by her trainer.
“I didn’t remember but my trainer told me it was 2010 in Canada. A left hip problem there as well. Tennis is good for you,” she said.
She said the stomach injury that caused her to miss the US Open – this is her first tournament since August last year – was serious from the outset but she believes this could be only a setback for Melbourne.
But even if she does play, she seems convinced this is an injury that will have to be managed along the way, rather than disappearing in time for the Open.
“I don’t doubt that there will be a problem once I start in Melbourne. It was getting a lot worse because I was starting to feel it when I was serving and landing. I didn’t want to get it to go to a complete spasm where the muscle can actually tear,” Clijsters said.
“I don’t think I’ve taken it that far. When you feel it getting worse and worse, it’s almost like you don’t have a choice.
“With this one (injury) I kinda have an OK feeling. I know with the trainers here, if everything comes out OK tomorrow, it should take a little under a week to get completely healed. That’s what I’m obviously hoping for and aiming for.
“I do have a good feeling about it.”
The injuries to Clijsters and Williams have thrown the women’s draw in the Australian Open wide open. Both were among the favourites to be in the final but the rest of the contenders now have cause for optimism.
Hantuchova, meanwhile, was somewhat overshadowed by the drama of Clijsters’ withdrawal but looked in very good touch in the first set, where she took a 3-0 lead before being mown down in a tie break, losing that 7-4.
With Clijsters visibly fading, she galloped to a 3-1 lead before the match was called off. The world number 24 spent two weeks in Noosa before this event and credited her good form to an early arrival in Australia.
“I felt like I was playing really well. I’m really enjoying my tennis at the moment. I’m just trying to do the things we worked on in the pre-season with my team. There are still a few things I need to improve,” Hantuchova said.
“I came here almost two weeks earlier. We were up in Noosa. I’m really pleased with the work we’ve done and it seems like it’s paying off early.
“We had such a wonderful time up there. It’s really one of my favourite parts of the world. I think I’ve fallen in love with the place.”
Kanepi is the world number 34 and has been one of the bolters in a topsy turvy tournament in Brisbane that has seen big guns Williams, Clijsters and Samantha Stosur all depart early.
She defeated second seed Andrea Petkovic in the quarter-finals before overcoming third seed Francesca Schiavone 6-3 6-0 last night to book a spot in the decider.

Federer withdraws, Nadal beaten in Doha

Roger Federer withdrew and Rafael Nadal was beaten at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on Friday.
A day of surprises began with defending champion Federer pulling out prior to his semi-final against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga due to a sore back.
The world number three played through the pain during his previous two matches but decided not to risk worsening the problem further ahead of the Australian Open, which starts on January 16.
"I hurt my back in the second-round match (on Wednesday)," Federer said.
"I don't think it's the right time to risk anything right now. For Australia, I'm optimistic. It's not good, but it isn't crazy bad.
"Without playing and the right treatment I will get through it in the next few days. I have a long journey in front of me, but hopefully mid-next week I should be 100 per cent again."
Federer started the tournament in imperious form, dropping just nine games in his opening two matches.
But he struggled in his quarter-final against Andreas Seppi, labouring to a 6-3 5-7 6-4 win.
Tsonga will now meet Gael Monfils in the final after he upset top-seeded Nadal.
Monfils posted a 6-3 6-4 victory in Doha, Nadal's hopes of a comeback thwarted after he had opened a 3-0 lead in the second set.

Fans given police warning

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have warned fans they will crack down on any troublemakers at Sunday's FA Cup derby clash at the Etihad Stadium.
There have been problems at City home games against United in recent seasons, with 29 arrested after the Carling Cup semi-final first-leg tie two years ago. Further disturbances have scarred the latest contests and there are fears the size of United's 5,700 visiting contingent this weekend creates the potential for even more problems.
GMP Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney said: "The close rivalry between the clubs really adds something extra to this fixture and should be embraced. But we must also ensure that this is not used as an excuse by some individuals to carry out football-related violence and disorder."

Wenger hasn’t found defensive replacement

Arsene Wenger has not identified a defender to cover his injury crisis just yet.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he has not found the defensive signing he wants in the transfer window just yet.
The Gunners chief has previously spoken of his need to bring in a short-term loan to cover the Emirates Stadium club’s defensive injury crisis.
Despite looking for cover, Wenger has been unable to identify a suitable candidate as yet and feels the current market makes any signing difficult.
“At the moment nothing, we don't have a concrete case but we don't rule it out. [A loan defender is] the likely scenario, yes,” Wenger told the club’s official website.
“[I am expecting a] quiet [market]. Europe is depressed and there is not a lot of money available, only some clubs who have exceptional resources.
“Let's say that clubs who are not linked with the economic environment at the moment can buy!”
The Frenchman is faced with one of the worst injury crises he has had to deal with in his time at Arsenal.
Already missing all four first team full-backs, Wenger then saw Thomas Vermaelen have to be withdrawn against QPR with a calf strain.
The problems were further compounded in the calamitous loss to Fulham earlier, with Johan Djourou seeing red and subsequently being suspended for Monday night’s FA Cup fixture against Leeds United.
Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs are the two specialist full-backs who will return soonest, but this will not be for another few weeks according to Wenger.
The North Londoners have been linked with a number of defenders leading up to January, including Wayne Bridge of Manchester City and Taye Taiwo of AC Milan.
However, Wenger dismissed any suggestion he would sign the City outcast and Taiwo’s agent has said there has been no contact between the two clubs over the Nigeria international.

United dismiss Rooney exit report

Manchester United and Wayne Rooney have issued a combined statement denying the England striker is about to leave.
Stories have emerged claiming the 26-year-old's relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson is broken beyond repair. This has been denied by both parties.
"Manchester United and Wayne Rooney have been made aware of the theme of an article in (Saturday's) Independent newspaper," said the statement. "We have not seen the detail but can assure all United fans that the manager and the club are committed to Wayne Rooney and Wayne is committed to the manager and the club."

‘King of assists’ will help Carroll

Steve McManaman thinks Steven Gerrard’s return will help Andy Carroll.

Liverpool cult hero Steve McManaman says Andy Carroll’s goal drought will end when ‘the King of assists’ Steven Gerrard returns.
The former England winger was confident Gerrard’s return from injury would help the £35million signing improve his scoring record at Anfield.
Gerrard has gradually returned to action following an ankle infection and McManaman believes this will cause a turnaround in the club’s scoring fortunes.
“If Carroll and Gerrard both play against Oldham, as I would hope, I think Andy will do well, because Stevie is the king of assists," he said.
“Liverpool have missed his passes, which unlock tight games. They have missed his set-piece delivery... and nobody has missed him more than Carroll.
“Gerrard will help him a lot. In the same way that he helped Fernando Torres a lot.
“His ability to deliver telling passes and crosses at the feet of Liverpool's strikers has been arguably their greatest strength for a decade now.
Many feel that Kenny Dalglish’s side were dealt a telling blow with the recent eight-game suspension of Luis Suarez.
McManaman believes that Carroll should get a run in the side with the Uruguayan’s absence and that the former Newcastle United man just needs a bit of luck to go on a scoring run.
“With Suarez out of the picture for a month, hopefully Carroll will get a run of games in the side to find that consistency," he added.
“Carroll only needs one to go in off his backside, or a hat-trick against lower-division opposition in the Cup, and he could be flying.”
The former Real Madrid man was speaking ahead of the Merseysiders FA Cup third round tie with League One side Oldham.

A decision on the fitness of captain John Terry - who has been struggling with a knee injury - will be made before kick-off.

Luke Varney is a doubt with a knee complaint, but Ricardo Rocha should be fit after missing the last two matches with a calf injury.
Di Matteo praises Appleton

Chelsea assistant manager Roberto Di Matteo is looking forward to locking horns with former understudy Michael Appleton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Appleton was working as West Brom's reserve team boss when Di Matteo took over at the Hawthorns, and promptly promoted him into the first team set-up.
The 36-year-old remained at with the Baggies after Di Matteo's departure, until he was offered the chance to take his first senior management role with Portsmouth.
It's been a difficult baptism for Appleton at Fratton Park so far, but Di Matteo expects his former colleague to be a hit on the south coast.
"He was unfortunate with the timing because only a few weeks after he was appointed, the owners of the club had some financial problems and went into administration," said Andre Villas-Boas' No.2.
"But at the moment it seems like they might have a new owner very soon. I hope that is going to happen for him and they will have some more financial resources.
"I sent him my best regards but I haven't spoken to him. I think we will catch up at the game but it will have to be quickly because we are both going to be very busy, but I wish him all the best - after Sunday."

Redknapp: League success possible with signings

Tottenham Hotspur news: Harry Redknapp believes two quality signings could make the difference in title chase

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has said he wants to sign two new players in the January transfer window.
The Spurs boss also expressed his surprise at his side’s current form and league placing but insisted they still have a chance at becoming Barclays Premier League champions.
However, the former West Ham United manager believes he will need to sign another two players to have a chance of achieving this goal.

Arsenal confirm Henry return

Arsenal news: Thierry Henry is available to face Leeds on Monday

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has had his loan move confirmed and is set to make his second debut for the club on Monday night.
The Gunners all-time leading goalscorer has been signed on a short-term loan deal to cover the loss of Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh to the Africa cup of nations.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed last week that he was ‘certain’ Henry would sign once more for the Gunners and the deal has now been completed.
“I am very happy. It was my desire and Thierry’s desire. We will have Thierry for January and in February. Then he will go back to the United States,” Wenger told the club’s official website.
“I am sure during these two months he will be a massive asset to the team in the dressing room and on the pitch.
“He can be relaxed, not under too much pressure and be a tremendous help to the team.”
The Gunners chief wanted to have the former France international available for the third round tie with Leeds United, but it was looking a though they would not make the deadline.
Henry had to be registered before noon today if he was to be eligible for the tie at Emirates Stadium – Arsenal beat the deadline by just over half an hour.
The hold up was thought to be a disagreement with the striker’s current club New York Red Bulls over the exact duration of the loan.
It was thought the MLS side wanted the deal to last for six weeks, rather than the two months preferred by Wenger.
The striker, who played 370 times for the Gunners and scored 226 goals, was stoic about the proposed move.
“It is unreal to be honest. But when it comes to Arsenal my heart will always do the talking,” said Henry.
Once I knew the plan behind it I was OK with it. I am not coming here to be a hero or prove anything. I am just coming here to help.
“People have to understand that. Marouane and Gervinho are going to the Africa Cup of Nations, so I was asked to fill in the gap.
“It is a loan deal and I’ll be on the bench most of the time. If I can make the bench that is! The Boss has a team here already who are doing something good. I am just going to be part of the squad.
“I want to send a message to the fans of New York Red Bulls as well,” continued the former Juventus and Monaco striker.
“I always said I would not play in Europe again. But it is hard for me when it comes to Arsenal. I am not coming here for the whole season, I will be back and I want to win the MLS Cup with the Red Bulls.”
While there has been no suggestion Henry can repeat the form of his best years in north London, many of the club’s current players have insisted he still has a lot to give.
The 34-year-old has been training with Arsenal for the past few weeks in order to keep fit during the MLS off-season and a number of people have said he still has what it takes to compete in the Premier League.
