£25 million price tag on Sturridge,Car Ban On Man Utd Player

Chelsea Tag £25 million price on Sturridge:

Chelsea have told Liverpool that they will not allow Daniel Sturridge to move to Anfield in a cut-price deal this week. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on landing Chelsea forward Sturridge, who fits neatly into Liverpool's long-term plan to sign young, British players and mould them into world-class stars.Yet Anfield insiders have revealed that Chelsea are holding out for a bumper fee for the England international, who is being valued at a whopping £25 million by the reigning European champions.That figure would appear to rule Liverpool out of the race to sign Sturridge, although they will still raise the possibility of a season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer.The price tag would appear a little inflated for a young player with just two years left on his current Chelsea contract and who was valued at just £6 million when he moved from Manchester City back in 2009. His previous employers would be entitled to a cut of any deal if he were to move before Friday's transfer deadline.

Fergie car ban! United boss puts his foot down on young players:

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has banned the club's young stars from driving flashy sports cars from new sponsors Chevrolet.United recently signed a multi-million-pound deal with the American car giant, who will become  the name on the club's shirts from the start of the  2014-15 season.As a gesture of goodwill, Chevrolet immediately offered United's first-team stars a choice of luxury cars and understandably many of the club's big names plumped for iconic Corvettes. However, Ferguson immediately intervened and decreed that no player under the age of 23 - no matter their standing in the team - should be allowed to order a sporty model. This means players such as young striker Danny Welbeck, 21, and defenders Phil Jones, 20, Chris Smalling, 22, and Rafael, 22, will be banned from driving anything not approved by Ferguson.The move is a classic case of Ferguson - the master man-manager ensuring his young stars don't get too big for their boots. Ferguson has always been hot on matters such as this. Two years ago, for example, it emerged he told players in the club's youth squads they were not allowed to wear coloured football boots. Last night a United spokesperson confirmed: 'As with most automotive partnerships, Chevrolet will be offering players a car. The model will be dependent on their time at the club and driving experience.'

US Open: Andy Murray beats Alex Bogomolov to enter second round

Andy Murray weathered a slow start in the latest stop of this long, successful summer.Seeking that elusive first Grand Slam title, Murray began his U.S. Open campaign Monday with a straight-set victory over Alex Bogomolov Jr. that included some hairy moments. The Olympic gold medalist overcame early breaks in the first two sets of a 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 win.The third-seeded Murray won the final five games of the first set and the last four games of the second after falling behind early against the 73rd-ranked Bogomolov.Murray, who won the gold medal in his home country at the London Games, also reached the final at Wimbledon.Back at the site of her greatest victory, Samantha Stosur looked like a champion again, not the player who has often struggled this year.The Australian began the defense of her Open title with a dominant win, needing 51 minutes to beat 64th-ranked Petra Martic 6-1, 6-1 in the tournament's first match at Arthur Ashe Stadium before rain suspended play for more than two hours."As soon as I got here, it was just a good feeling and excitement to be back to a city that obviously brought me so much last year," Stosur said.The last time Stosur played on this court, she stunned Serena Williams in the 2011 final at Flushing Meadows for her first Grand Slam title. But in so many ways, that 6-2, 6-3 victory was starting to feel as if it happened much more than a year ago.Stosur lost in the first round in front of the home fans at the 2012 Australian Open. She lost in the second round at Wimbledon, then again in the first round at the London Olympics.Sandwiched in between, she made a run to the semifinals of the French Open, but fell apart by committing 21 unforced errors in the third set of her loss to Sara Errani."Today kind of carried on from exactly how I was feeling last year," Stosur said. "Hopefully that's a good omen. ... Last year I did feel that comfort out there and nothing bothered me; today was along the same lines."Against Martic, who withdrew from the Olympics with a left foot injury, Stosur won the first 19 points, five away from a golden set, before the streak ended on a double-fault."It pops into your head and you think, 'Oh, that would be cool,'" Stosur said of winning a set without dropping a point.She was still nearly perfect, with 22 winners and 10 aces. She didn't face any break points.Ninth-seeded Li Na reached the second round for the first time since 2009, beating Britain's Heather Watson 6-2, 6-3. She's coming off a victory in Cincinnati, her first title since the 2011 French Open.Li was a top-10 seed when she lost in the first round at Flushing Meadows in each of the previous two years.Marion Bartoli of France, seeded 11th, defeated American Jamie Hampton 6-3, 7-6 (5), and 19th-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia.It was a rough first day for the German women, with 16th-seeded Sabine Lisicki and 18th-seeded Julia Goerges both losing.James Blake reached the second round of a Grand Slam event for the first time this year, beating Lukas Lacko 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The 32-year-old American needed a wild card to make his 12th appearance at the Open after his ranking fell out of the top 100. He hadn't lost in the first round at Flushing Meadows since his debut in 1999.Blake, who has twice made the quarterfinals at the Open, won the first two sets against the 54th-ranked Lacko before the rain delay.Top-seeded Roger Federer plays American Donald Young in the night session Monday.Also playing in Arthur Ashe Stadium are No. 3 Maria Sharapova, against Melinda Czink of Hungary, and No. 23 Kim Clijsters, opening the final tournament of her career with a first-round match against American Victoria Duval. Clijsters missed last year with an injury, but has won the tournament the past three times she's entered — in 2005, 2009 and 2010.

Australia gets win against Afghanistan

It was a historic night for Afghanistan, being just their second taste of elite one-day international cricket, but any hopes of a fairy-tale victory were dashed by the reality as they were eventually outgunned by an Australia side featuring some of the best cricketers in the world.But the key word is eventually, as Afghanistan proved a more than worthy opponent capable of exposing flaws in this Australia side during a spirited run chase.Australia were in control thanks to the contrasting styles of Matthew Wade and Michael Clarke, who each posted 75, and the indefatigable Michael Hussey (49), as they set an impressive total of 273 on a sluggish surface in oppressive conditions, before the pace and swing of Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson ripped through the Afghanistan top order to leave them reeling at 49 for 4.But this team that has ascended from rubble, through lowly ICC division five cricket to the World Twenty20, showed its incredible fighting spirit, exemplified by Asghar Stanikzai and Mohammad Nabi.The pair combined for 86 to send shudders through the Australia camp, mainly because of the momentum gathered along the way. Nabi, having earlier claimed two wickets with his crafty offspin, took a shining to Xavier Doherty and Glenn Maxwell, clubbing three sixes off the two Australia tweakers. Stanikzai chimed in with a slog-sweep of his own and although they did not turn the strike over as a professional side would the scoreboard moved at a very healthy rate.It forced Clarke into a rethink, having to turn back to Starc. His pace again unsettled the Afghanistan pair and saw Stanikzai offer a sharp chance to mid-on where George Bailey could not hang on. From there Nabi and Stanikzai added 40 in just 36 balls before Mitchell Johnson bowled Nabi through the gate from around the wicket. Nonetheless the partnership left Australia ragged and rattled. Stanikzai progressed to a well deserved half-century as he bravely battled cramp and fatigue.Clarke again called on Starc in the batting Powerplay. The left-arm quick conceded three boundaries to Stanikzai before the captain took a terrific catch at midwicket to end one of the best innings by an Afghan in ODI cricket and effectively end the match. Starc finished with four wickets and was comfortably the pick of the Australia bowlers.Earlier, after one look at a pitch that resembled a strip of shiny concrete in the middle of the Sharjah Association Ground, Clarke did not hesitate in electing to bat first. His assertion that the wicket looked good for batting, if a little slow, proved prophetic as both Australia openers wrestled with their timing early. Wade, re-acquainting himself with opening in the absence of Shane Watson, found timing particularly hard to come by against the accurate and consistent new-ball pairing of Shapoor Zadran and Dawlat Zadran.David Warner found the going a little easier when he was offered some width from Shapoor. He also took the chance to club the left-armer down the ground. But Shapoor was rewarded for his shorter length when Warner edged an attempted cut to a ball a fraction close, to hand Afghanistan their first wicket inside seven overs.Enter the captain at first drop, a familiar sight for Australia fans in years past, but a rare venture for Clarke. It is only the fifth time he has batted at No. 3 since he succeeded Ricky Ponting as the full-time captain.Clarke took his time to assess the surface but his fluency and class were quickly unveiled. An effortless straight-drive for four was a cut-above anything Warner and Wade had played on a surface lacking pace and an outfield lacking speed. Although he only struck three fours and two sixes in his 75, Clarke's footwork and placement were a feature throughout as he handled the spinners comfortably.Wade was anything but comfortable throughout his 108-ball stay. The suffocating heat of the UAE, with temperatures hovering above 34 degrees Celsius well after sunset, looked to be getting the better of Wade. But he stuck to his task admirably to register his highest ODI score and provide the perfect foil to Clarke as they combined for a 131-run stand.They were undone by Afghanistan's most experienced spinners in Samiullah Shenwari and Nabi. Shenwari's wrist spin was particularly good, save for two rank full tosses that were both dispatched by Clarke. He should have claimed both wickets, having had Wade dropped by his captain Nawroz Mangal at midwicket on 32. Wade eventually fell to a sharp return catch by the offspinner Nabi, before Shenwari became only the sixth man in ODIs to spin one past the advancing blade of Clarke to have the Australia captain stumped.Australia's debutant, Victoria allrounder Glenn Maxwell, was promoted to No. 4 during the batting Powerplay without success. He holed out to long-on for just 2 before the Hussey brothers did what the Hussey brothers do to tick the total beyond 200. But a brilliant piece of fielding from Gulbodin Naib to run out David hindered Australia's progression momentarily, before Michael showed how valuable he still is to this outfit with a finishing flurry that only he could have compiled.Hussey and Bailey combined for 53 in five overs. The purity of their striking was made even more impressive by the fact that the wicket was getting progressively slower. It was the third time in four innings that this duo have posted 50 or more together.It was a night of firsts all-round. Not only was it the first meeting between these two nations, it was also the first time Australia were involved in a match in which both 50-over innings were completed under moonlight. The Afghanistan players also took prayer breaks at both drinks junctures as well as the innings break, something also foreign to this Australia side.

Luka Modric nears £27m move to Madrid as Tottenham agree 'partnership' with Spanish giants

Luka Modric will be unveiled as a Real Madrid player after they hammered out a £27million move for the midfielder on Sunday night. The fee is a blow for Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, who was holding out for a figure in the region of £35m-plus. The two clubs have also agreed a new 'partnership' that, according to Spurs, will see them 'working together in respect of players, coaching, best practices and commercial relationships.'That is likely to mean that Modric is only the latest player to move between the two sides.Levy said: 'Luka has been a terrific player for us and, whilst we preferred not to part with him, we are pleased that it is to Real Madrid, a club with which we now look forward to sharing a long and productive partnership.'Real president Florentino Perez added: 'The strong relationship and affinity between our two clubs has resulted in the cementing of a longer-term partnership and the successful transfer of Luka Modric.'We are delighted to welcome Luka and look forward to working closely with Tottenham in the coming years.'Spurs are desperate to bolster their squad after a slow start to the season and the money will help fund moves for two Brazilians they are chasing Willian of Shakhtar Donetsk and  Leandro Damiao of Internacional. Manager Andre Villas-Boas is keen to sign at least three before the transfer window shuts on Friday. Fulham’s Moussa Dembele is much admired at White Hart Lane and Spurs scouts also watched France striker Loic Remy come on as a second-half substitute on Sunday as Marseille beat Montpellier 1-0. The north London club continue to pursue young defenders too, with Liam Moore, 19, of Leicester watched in their 2-1 defeat at Blackburn. Moore also interests Manchester United and Everton.Tottenham remain keen on Ezekiel Fryers, 19, the former United defender who has signed for Standard Liege but could be pursued in January. A Spurs deal for Fryers fell through, with United looking for £6m in compensation from any English club that signed him.QPR plan to resume negotiations over a deal for Tottenham defender Michael Dawson today but he is reluctant to leave White Hart Lane. Stoke will also revisit a loan for Tom Huddlestone.Another midfield target of Spurs, Rennes’ Yann M’Vila, is also on a list of Arsenal targets but the Gunners may prefer a £15m move for his France teammate Yohan Cabaye of Newcastle.Manager Arsene Wenger, who initially targeted Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote and also wants another defender, said: ‘I anticipate that we will do something. Defensive midfielder? It depends on the quality of the players available.’
