It was fitting, then, that the first soccer match at the symbol of the Yankee's dominance should be two teams who are now similar financial behemoths of the European game, and who share with the Yankees the luxury problem of trying to translate an abundance of wealth into the trophies they most crave. The two teams are at very different stages of their respective projects. As PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti pointed out after the game, Chelsea have had almost a decade of investment in their side, while PSG only began their round of conspicuous consumption last year. Yet watching the two sides in the first half of this game, it would have been hard to tell which was the side of newer vintage. Despite having less of the ball, PSG showed pace and wit in possession, repeatedly stretching the Chelsea backline marshalled by Luiz and Cahill, as they sent defence-splitting balls through for the dangerous Lavezzi to try and feed on.Chelsea were outfought too in the opening half, losing 65% of the one-on-one battles in the opening period, while their front man Lukaku had little chance to show whether his undoubted strength and talent can be harnessed as a lone striker who can hold up the ball. There were positives - flashes of invention from Hazard and a confident de Bruyne always showing for the ball and looking for the shooting angle, but PSG's opening goal, on half an hour, always looked to be coming. After all their probing through balls, the goal turned out to be the product of much closer control. There seemed to be little danger when Pastore picked up the ball at the left corner of the box, with three Chelsea players in close attendance. But the player showed great tenacity to wriggle through and flick a shot of Cech's near upright. With the goalkeeper committed the ball ricocheted off the post to Nene, following in, who managed to steer in a finish off the legs of Luiz. The goal silenced the overwhelmingly pro-Chelsea crowd, while the small pocket of PSG fans celebrated behind the goal. Up to that point the largest cheer PSG had had, was when Chelsea alumni Alex and Ancelotti had their names read out in the pre-game line up announcements. The assembled blue hordes had also cheered montages of the Champions League run and Peter Osgood's greatest hits prior to the game, but this Chelsea side didn't give their support much to cheer about before half time.Chelsea could have been forgiven for thinking the inevitable swathe of half-time substitutions would favour them - PSG made eight changes, including their entire backline and goalscorer, while Chelsea would have regarded Ivanovic, Essien, Ramires, and Marin for Luiz, Lampard, De Bruyne and Kakuta, as at the very least, no net loss. But rather than giving Chelsea momentum the game lost shape until the hour, with PSG still passing neatly, though with less immediate danger, and Chelsea still looking slightly anonymous. On the hour mark, the noise level lifted again. Another wave of substitutes, most of them Chelsea's, entered the fray - among them John Terry, trotting onto the field to one of the largest cheers of the night and a standing ovation (and a smattering of boos). Chelsea may be undergoing a transformation in style and personnel following their success in Munich, but the roots of that success remain in this side. As if reminded of the formula, Chelsea began to gradually get stronger as the game edged towards a more exciting denouement.First came the equalizer, from the Brazilian connection. Running down the right in the 82nd minute, Ramires looked to have nothing on, until he threaded a smart ball inside for the lunging Piazon, a fellow sub, to nudge across the keeper at the near post. Cue another huge cheer and an emboldened Chelsea side pushing for a winner. They nearly got one too - Cole's 86th minute ball across goal finding Malouda with his back to goal at point blank range, but his turn and shot was straight at the keeper.Even as Chelsea escalated their efforts though, PSG were matching them punch for punch and could have won it themselves when the ball broke to Hoarau in the box - only for his off-balance shot to scoop straight into the arms of a grateful Ross Turnbull (on for Cech). Then as the game drifted into stoppage time, the impressive Pastore curled a 25 yard shot towards the top corner, forcing Turnbull to claw the ball away. The result of course is ultimately meaningless, and the second half substitutions provided their usual friendly game function of providing more questions than insights. Nonetheless, this was an impressive display by PSG, even without their newest asset Ibrahimovic, while Chelsea got a workout, another chance for Di Matteo to look at his side in this configuration and vital minutes for their fringe players. They move on to meet the MLS all-stars on Wednesday, while PSG will face DC United in their next game in the Challenge.

Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed the club's interest in securing a deal for Sao Paulo midfielder Lucas Moura, but denied press reports that a deal had been struck.Lucas, 19, is in demand this summer, with United, Real Madrid and Inter Milan all heavily linked with the Brazilian prospect who shot to prominence in early 2011.A report on Sunday night indicated that the Red Devils had secured a £26 million deal for the attacking midfielder, but Ferguson strongly denied those claims."It's not correct," Ferguson told a press conference on the club's pre-season tour in Shanghai. "We haven't reached an agreement for the player. We've shown an interest but until such time we get a deal agreed we can't say he's our player."When prompted, Ferguson also confirmed to reporters that the club are still looking into various transfer options ahead of the new campaign, saying: "We've signed two players in the summer: Kagawa and Powell," he added. "We think they both have fantastic potential."At this moment we're looking at other options in terms of bringing other players in. We're not lying on our backsides doing nothing. We're trying hard to bring other players to the club."

South Africa dominant since the start of the second day, secured an innings and 12-run victory at The Oval as they broke the back of some stubborn England resistance either side of the new ball on the final afternoon. Ian Bell and Matt Prior had given the home side hope, but Imran Tahir broke the stand and Dale Steyn then steamed in to finish with 5 for 56.The result was nothing less than South Africa deserved for a performance that confirmed what a formidable team they are and they achieved it on a ground where they had not won in 13 previous attempts. Indifferent on the first day, they barely put a foot wrong from the moment they rattled England on Friday morning. Showing the benefit of a finely balanced attack including pace, swing, seam, accuracy and spin, they did not fret when resistance was being put up.It was England's first home defeat since losing to Pakistan, on the same ground, in 2010 and their first innings loss since facing South Africa, at Johannesburg, earlier that same year. For South Africa, it continues their run of taking the series lead each time in England since readmission although it is the first time they have won the opening Test since 1994.As in England's first innings, when Kevin Pietersen was dismissed, it was wicket moments before the second new ball that undid much of the good work. Prior, having shown impressive judgement, swept Tahir who was bowling around the wicket into the rough and a top edge went to Jacques Kallis at slip. The sweep, which caused England so many problems in the UAE and in Galle, was back to haunt them.Bell, having reached his slowest Test fifty and resisted for 220 deliveries, then played his worst shot for some time when he guided the ball straight to Kallis at second slip as though giving morning catching practice. As in Cape Town in 2010 it was another defiant display from Bell but the weakness of the shot that ended his stay was symptomatic of why England came off second best. You cannot let down your guard for a moment against this South Africa team.A tail, even with England's pedigree, against a new ball is gift-wrapped for a pumped-up Steyn and it did not take him long. Stuart Broad was given out through the DRS to a glove down the leg side and Graeme Swann drove to cover. Tim Bresnan and James Anderson resisted for 10 overs, delayed tea, and threatened to make South Africa bat again, but Tahir ended the match with a grubber to trap Anderson lbw.Although England had hope shortly after lunch, the major damage had been done the previous evening with the loss of four top-order wickets. Bell and Ravi Bopara resumed with the deficit still 150 and the odds stacked against them.Initially Bopara suggested solidity with a tight defence and a couple of confident shots into the leg side, although he came within a millimetre of losing his off stump when he left a delivery from Steyn which shaped back. Then, in Steyn's next, his eyes lit up at the offer of some width but instead of the ball finding the cover boundary it took a bottom edge into middle stump. The days between this Test and Headingley will be filled with further debate over his Test place. After the early spells from the quicks, Tahir, who created plenty of problems on the fourth evening especially for Andrew Strauss, was introduced and should have removed Bell for 20 in his first over but AB de Villiers could not take a regulation outside edge. It was de Villiers' first mistake of the match and ultimately would not prove costly. For the second time in the match, Prior and Bell were nearly involved in a run out when Prior played a ball square to cover and Bell was a little slow responding for the run, but de Villiers could not quite gather JP Duminy's throw. When Bell elegantly drove the last ball of the session down the ground there was just a thought that a Cardiff-style escape was within England's grasp. South Africa soon dashed that notion.

Tottenham Hotspur have issued seperate fines to Luka Modric for missing training on Friday and refusing to board the flight for the club's pre-season tour of America.Spurs have ordered Modric to report back for training on Monday and plan to fine him a third time should he fail to attend. The total would amount to £160,000 already if Spurs decide on the maximum punishment. The Croatia midfielder, having failed to secure his desired move to Chelsea last summer, has resolved to leave White Hart Lane and is now determined to secure a move to Real Madrid. Tottenham have accepted, and publicly acknowledged, that the 26-year-old should be allowed to leave, but only if their asking price is met.Spurs want a fee close to £40 million, rather than the £35 million frequently suggested, although there may be some negotiation. However, it is understood that, to date, Real Madrid have offered only £27 million plus fringe players or add-ons up to a total value of £32 million.Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will not do business at that price, and manager Andre Villas-Boas was earlier quoted as telling Spanish newspaper AS that Modric was "wrong" to act the way he did and that his actions would "go against him".though, that Villas-Boas' comments were part of an off-the-record briefing to the Spanish journalist and that the Portuguese feels badly let down that they were reported.

Fernando Alonso The Spaniard Has Won The Controversial German Grandprix 2012.Alonso never opened up a big lead but never looked in serious danger of losing it either, successfully fending off the Red Bull of Vettel and the upgraded McLaren of Jenson Button."It was tough. Maybe we were not the fastest in dry conditions but we were competitive to retain the lead," Alonso said. "Jenson was putting a lot of pressure."Alonso also won the German GP the last time it was run on the Hockenheim circuit two years ago.Vettel failed again to win his home race and he was penalized for overtaking Button from outside the track, having gone off the circuit with all four wheels with one lap remaining in the 67-lap race. The 20-second penalty further dents Vettel's chances of retaining the title. Button moved up to second and Kimi Raikkonen to third."I wasn't sure if he (Button) was on the inside or not. The last thing you want to do is make contact. When we were side by side, I tried to give him enough room but it's difficult to see. I went wide," Vettel said before the ruling. "We were all struggling with tires, Jenson in particular, which is why I was able to pass him."I decided to go off the circuit to make it safe for both of us. His rear tires had no traction and even on the paint I was able to stay ahead."Button had been challenging Alonso for the lead, before his tires gave out over the last few laps."I had a great race out there and it is nice to be fighting at the front again," the Briton said.Button did not want to comment on Vettel's overtaking move.Alonso became the first driver to win three races this season and now has a 34-point lead over Mark Webber, the second Red Bull driver, who was eighth.Alonso has 154 points after 10 of 20 races, Webber has 120 and Vettel 110.Vettel complained bitterly about Button's McLaren teammate, Lewis Hamilton, saying he was slowed on lap 35 when the Briton tried to get past cars that had already lapped him. Hamilton, in his 100th Grand Prix, had an early puncture that ruined his race before he retired on lap 59."I don't see the point in him trying to race us. It is a bit stupid to race the leaders," Vettel said.Vettel said Hamilton's move probably caused him to lose second place to Button temporarily."That potentially lost me the position to Jenson, I pitted two or three laps after that," Vettel said. "If you are a lap down and there is no chance to win the race, you should respect it and use common sense. I didn't expect him to attack."Michael Schumacher, the seven-time F1 champion, started from third but eventually dropped to seventh, losing a couple of places after making a late third pit stop to put on another set of soft tires. He posted the fastest lap of the race but could not gain any places and still remains winless in the third season of his comeback."There are better ways to finish your home race than to drop from third to seventh. But I just couldn't get more out of the car," Schumacher said.Schumacher has not said whether he intends to continue racing and, if not, this could have been the 43-year-old German's final race at home.Raikkonen of Finland was one of the drivers to overtake Schumacher and finished fourth in his Lotus, before Vettel's penalty moved him up to third.Kamui Kobayashi of Japan drove his Sauber to fourth and teammate Sergio Perez of Mexico ended up sixth as the finish was reshuffled following Vettel's penalty.

Bradley Wiggins Of England Wins Tour De France 2012.Bradley Wiggins saved one of his best performances en-route to becoming the first Briton to win the Tour de France to the end - and he was on the podium, not his bike when he did it. The moment being when he was handed the microphone during the jersey and trophy presentations and told the crowd of thousands who lined the Champs Elysees on a glistening summer's day and said: "We're just going to draw the raffle numbers now"Those who got Wiggins' humour in the crowd that was lacquered heavily with thousands of British fans who had either followed the Tour in France throughout or part of its journey, or who had just travelled over for the historic occasion, cheered at his impromptu impersonation of a bingo caller."My old mother over there, her son has just won the Tour de France".He continued: "I want to thank everyone, the support has been amazing. It's been a magical couple of weeks. Some dreams do come true. My old mother over there, her son has just won the Tour de France," before signing off to join his teammates that included Australians Michael Rogers and Richie Porte for a quick celebration before flying home to Wigan in England to say: "Thanks again. Have a safe journey home. Don't get too drunk."How the crowd roared and the smiles beamed. And so the 99th Tour de France came to a joyous end, especially for the British - the riders, the fans, the sport of cycling and no doubt the whole of Great Britain that will now turn its attention to hosting the Olympic Games starring Wiggins 'et al.'Top billing with Wiggins there no doubt will be another of his Sky teammates, Briton Mark Cavendish, the world champion who signed off on an almost perfect Tour for their team with a bunch sprint victory to win the final and 20th stage, a 120km race from Rambouillet south of Paris to the Champs Elysees. It was his second stage win for the Tour, his team's fifth and, with David Millar's (Garmin-Sharp) win, the sixth for British cycling. As if that was not enough, Sky clinched a rare one-two with Briton Chris Froome (Sky) placing second overall to Wiggins at 3 minutes 21 second, while in third at 6mins 19secs was Italian Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) whose brave bid to crack the Sky defence earned his podium place.Meanwhile, Australian Cadel Evans (BMC), last year's winner, pledged to return to the Tour next year and confirmed his hunger for a second win. After the stage which saw Wiggins finish 54th at 9 seconds to Cavendish who beat Slovakia's Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Australian Matt Goss (Orica-GreenEDGE) in that order, Evans was left in seventh place overall, but at 15 mins 49secs after he finished 27th at 7 secs to Cavendish."To finish another Tour is always a satisfaction. Its always good to be with a great group of guys. And the team we have, I enjoy working with them and being with them," Evans said. "But after the success of last year ... it wasn't what we had hoped for and it certainly wasn't up to the level of last year."Asked if he got any satisfaction, he said: "Sometimes ... but winning is a lot more fun. It's a lot easier when you are winning. When you are having a bad time, when you are sick or something in this sport it plays on you in those hard days in the mountains ... this is the hardest sport one earth."Then when pressed on a tilt at the 2013 title, he said: "Absolutely, I will come back again ... 100 per cent better than this year, that's for sure. We will work everything for a big and better Tour. I think I still have the capability to win and in the end its always up to me. So that's what matters most."Meanwhile, for Goss and the Australian OricaGreenEDGE team it was another case of the "what ifs" in the stage finish won by Cavendish. But it was not for lack of trying. The teams put up a brave fight in the stage finish to combat Cavendish's sheer speed and power, even though the Manx Missile still came over the Australian to win the stage convincingly. "It's not easy to lose a stage here in the Tour de France. We have given it everything we have  a couple of seconds, a few thirds, we got taken out of the points classification wtih that [early] disqualification," Goss said. "But we had a good Tour. We have gelled really well. It's our first year out. We have been around the mark. It's a huge honour to come on to the Champs Elysees. I got goose bumps coming out of the tunnel and riding with these guys. We had such a good time and the feeling of the team is so good. We didn't win a stage here, but there are a lot more races ahead. We've already had a lot of success in the early part of the season. It's not going to stop I think."
