Franciszek Smuda took the Poland job in 2009 |
Poland Coach Franciszek Smuda Has Announced His Exit After Poland Were Knocked Out From Euro 2012 Being Stepped Down.Having drawn with both Greece and Russia, Poland knew victory in their final game against Czech Republic would secure victory, but they ultimately succumbed to a 1-0 defeat that saw them finish bottom of Group A.Smuda, 63, has now confirmed that he will not continue in the post.“This is the end of my adventure,” he told TVP. “The contract expires at the end of Euro 2012. Thank you all."For these two and a half years, we have created a team we can count on in the future. They were not perfect, they were not as good as we imagined, but this is football."Smuda suggested his players had been overconfident in their approach to the game against the Czechs and had failed to perform when it mattered."We have to swallow this bitter pill today," Smuda said. "I think that probably we were too sure about the possibility of winning against the Czech Republic.“We did everything we could. We misplaced too many passes in the second half and had to work hard to win back possession."They played excellent football, they scored a goal, we had some opportunities in the first half but we didn't take advantage of them and we lost the game."In the second half we really wanted to attack the Czechs. Unfortunately in the changing room we said something and on the pitch the players did something different.``We cannot say that the players didn't want to win - perhaps they were too motivated. Of course we wanted to reach the quarter-finals but we did not manage to do so."
