Luka Modric nears £27m move to Madrid as Tottenham agree 'partnership' with Spanish giants

Luka Modric will be unveiled as a Real Madrid player after they hammered out a £27million move for the midfielder on Sunday night. The fee is a blow for Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, who was holding out for a figure in the region of £35m-plus. The two clubs have also agreed a new 'partnership' that, according to Spurs, will see them 'working together in respect of players, coaching, best practices and commercial relationships.'That is likely to mean that Modric is only the latest player to move between the two sides.Levy said: 'Luka has been a terrific player for us and, whilst we preferred not to part with him, we are pleased that it is to Real Madrid, a club with which we now look forward to sharing a long and productive partnership.'Real president Florentino Perez added: 'The strong relationship and affinity between our two clubs has resulted in the cementing of a longer-term partnership and the successful transfer of Luka Modric.'We are delighted to welcome Luka and look forward to working closely with Tottenham in the coming years.'Spurs are desperate to bolster their squad after a slow start to the season and the money will help fund moves for two Brazilians they are chasing Willian of Shakhtar Donetsk and  Leandro Damiao of Internacional. Manager Andre Villas-Boas is keen to sign at least three before the transfer window shuts on Friday. Fulham’s Moussa Dembele is much admired at White Hart Lane and Spurs scouts also watched France striker Loic Remy come on as a second-half substitute on Sunday as Marseille beat Montpellier 1-0. The north London club continue to pursue young defenders too, with Liam Moore, 19, of Leicester watched in their 2-1 defeat at Blackburn. Moore also interests Manchester United and Everton.Tottenham remain keen on Ezekiel Fryers, 19, the former United defender who has signed for Standard Liege but could be pursued in January. A Spurs deal for Fryers fell through, with United looking for £6m in compensation from any English club that signed him.QPR plan to resume negotiations over a deal for Tottenham defender Michael Dawson today but he is reluctant to leave White Hart Lane. Stoke will also revisit a loan for Tom Huddlestone.Another midfield target of Spurs, Rennes’ Yann M’Vila, is also on a list of Arsenal targets but the Gunners may prefer a £15m move for his France teammate Yohan Cabaye of Newcastle.Manager Arsene Wenger, who initially targeted Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote and also wants another defender, said: ‘I anticipate that we will do something. Defensive midfielder? It depends on the quality of the players available.’

Spanish La-Liga Result: Barcelona victorious over Osasuna, Real Madrid Shocking Defeat Against Getafe

Osasuna 1-2 Barcelona
Barcelona escaped from the Estadio El Sadar with a 2-1 victory over Osasuna in their La Liga encounter on Sunday. The Blaugrana were second best for much of the game and fell behind in the 17th minute to a goal from Joseba Llorente.Their woes continued in the second half as Osasuna kept them on the back foot, while coach Tito Vilanova was sent to the stands in the 73rd minute for protesting to the linesman. However, a controversial equaliser from Lionel Messi brought them back into the match moments later and Osasuna captain Patxi Punal was sent off for protesting the goal. The Argentine would pop up once again four minutes later to poke home the winner and give the Catalans a win that they scarcely deserved, after a spirited and purposeful performance from the home side. Vilanova rested Xavi from the start, with David Villa also taking his place on the bench as Cristian Tello and Alexis Sanchez started up front alongside Lionel Messi. With sunlight beating down over Estadio El Sadar, Barcelona were slow getting out of the blocks, and had Victor Valdes to thank for denying Alvaro Cejudo from close range inside the opening two minutes.Andres Iniesta would create danger at the other end, teeing up Tello, who saw his effort touched by Andres Fernandez onto the post. However, just when it looked like the Blaugrana were beginning to get into their stride, Osasuna would bring them back down to earth with the opener after 17 minutes.Roland Lamah was the architect, whipping in a dangerous cross from the left that was side-footed in by Llorente, who ghosted in behind Jordi Alba at the far post.Tello saw a close-range shot saved by Fernandez and Iniesta should have found the target after latching on to Sanchez’s cutback from 12 yards out, but the chances did not mask Barca’s struggles in attack, as they failed to connect with many of their passes.Their difficulties at the back were even more pronounced, as Osasuna looked dangerous every time they attacked. The home side came very close to a second, as the lively Lamah saw his drive parried by Valdes, and Llorente blocked twice by Gerard Pique from the rebound. However, Barca had a chance to draw level just before the break. A quickly worked free kick from Cesc Fabregas found Messi in range, but his initial attempt was saved by Fernandez, who also recovered in time to smother Iniesta’s follow-up.The visitors’ problems continued as the second half unfolded and another defensive lapse almost cost them dear just before the hour mark. Carles Puyol’s sloppy pass was pounced on by Sisi, whose low angler towards the corner was tipped wide by Valdes.Lamah continued to be a thorn in Barcelona’s side and the Belgian made his presence felt again in the 66th minute, as he drove in from the left and drilled a dangerous shot across the face of goal.Moments later, Sergio Busquets would almost gift Osasuna a second goal, after he was stripped of possession by Nino just outside the box, who bent his finish onto the post from point blank range. In the 73rd minute, Vilanova was sent to the stands for arguing with the linesman on the sidelines. However, just when Osasuna were at their most dangerous, a moment of controversy undid all their hard work and brought Barcelona back into the game.Punal was obstructed by referee Fernandez in the middle, but play was allowed to continue, allowing Barca to deliver into the Osasuna area. The hosts were not able to clear and Sanchez was able to poke to Messi, who stroked home from six yards out.Osasuna protested an offside call on Sanchez to no avail and Punal was given his marching orders in the confusion. Within four minutes of the restart, matters became even worse for the home side as Barcelona struck again.A sweeping move from the visitors saw Alba drive a low cross towards Messi inside the area and the Argentine did not hesitate, side-footing past Fernandez to put his side into the lead.Osasuna could not muster a response and Barca held on to claim three priceless points that they barely warranted.

Getafe 2-1 Real Madrid
Real Madrid's troubled start to the season continued when the champions squandered the lead and slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat at city rivals Getafe in the Spanish Primera Division yesterday (this morning, Singapore time) to slip five points behind leaders Barcelona. The rare reverse for Jose Mourinho's side, who drew 1-1 at home to Valencia last weekend, ended their 24-match unbeaten run in the league, their longest in 15 years.Real looked comfortably in control when Gonzalo Higuain fired them ahead from close range in the 27th minute at the Coliseum in Madrid. But their failure to capitalise on long periods of possession ultimately cost them and lowly Getafe levelled eight minutes after the break when Juan Valera nodded past Iker Casillas from a free-kick. It went from bad to worse for the visitors 15 minutes from time when substitute Adrian Colunga set up Abdelaziz Barrada to smash the ball high into the net and secure a famous victory."We were unable to close out the game," said Real's Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso. "Obviously we have to improve and we are self-critical but we have to take things slowly."It was a setback we really weren't expecting and we have to change the dynamic as soon as possible."Lionel Messi had earlier saved an off-colour Barcelona from a first defeat of the campaign when he struck twice in the second half in a 2-1 comeback victory at 10-man Osasuna.Barca have six points from two games and top the table on goal difference from Rayo Vallecano, who beat Real Betis 2-1 on Saturday.Real, who lost a league match for the first time after leading at half-time in more than five years, have a solitary point and are down in 15th. They also need to regroup for Wednesday's Spanish Super Cup second leg at home to Barca, when they will be attempting to overturn a 3-2 deficit from last week's first leg at the Camp Nou.The defeat saw an angry Mourinho give his Real players a rare public tongue-lashing."Real were very bad. An unacceptable match," a grim-faced Mourinho said while refusing to single out any player in particular for criticism."The only message I want you to take away tonight is that it was a deserved defeat for us. This was a match in which the defeat was absolutely deserved. More than two matches with just one point it was a horrible match."

Barclays Premier League match-week 2:Man city ends up square,Arsenal struggles to find net

The Other Two Matches Result For EPL Match-week 2:

Liverpool 2-2 Manchester City
Brendan Rodgers praised the performance of his Liverpool side against Manchester City in the Premier League, despite mistakes leading to both City goals in a 2-2 draw at Anfield Sunday.Rodgers was pleased with the resilience his team showed and was confident Liverpool will improve as the season continues."I thought it was a brilliant performance," Rodgers said. "We were asked a lot of questions and I thought the players were incredible. Sometimes the best team doesn't win."Martin Skrtel gave Liverpool the lead with a powerful header from a Steven Gerrard corner in the first half but Yaya Toure equalized for Roberto Mancini's side in the 63rd after Pepe Reina failed to claim a cross that Martin Kelly then could not control.Luis Suarez restored Liverpool's lead with a perfectly executed low free kick into the corner of Joe Hart's goal.Skrtel was at fault for City's second with an under-hit pass back toward Reina, which Carlos Tevez ran on to, rounding Liverpool's goalkeeper and slotting into an empty net for his 100th goal in English football.Rodgers refused to blame Skrtel's error for his side's failure to secure three points in his first home league match as Liverpool manager."He was brave enough to play it and that's the development of the team. As a group we will only get better," Rodgers said.Mancini was disappointed with the result, admitting his frustration at his side conceding two goals in each of its two games this season."This is the time to finish conceding two goals every game," Mancini said. "But we have taken one point when we went down two times."We started with the ball for 30 minutes; we had it in their half and had four or five chances to score. But we conceded a goal from a corner and something changed."Liverpool plays Arsenal at Anfield next Sunday while City faces Queens Park Rangers at home on Saturday.

Stoke City 0-0 Arsenal
Arsenal and Stoke produced a goalless draw at the Britannia Stadium, with Olivier Giroud coming closest to scoring for the London side in the final minute of the game.Giroud collected a pass from substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 40 yards from goal on the left and tried to lob Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, with the shot glancing the roof of the net. Stoke manager Tony Pulis gave United States international Geoff Cameron his debut in the center of midfield while fellow offseason signing Michael Kightly also started.Midfielder Santi Cazorla produced another lively display for Arsene Wenger's side, trying his luck with a number of long range attempts, while Stoke had a goal for Jonathan Walters correctly ruled out for offside in the first half.
